Our Vision

We envision a future where communities invest in healing and restorative practices, replacing punitive systems with compassionate, community-led alternatives that honor the brilliance and potential of every young person.

By strengthening the ecosystem of credible messenger organizations and other community-based alternatives, we support those working to refine their practices, expand their reach, and create sustainable, transformative pathways for youth. Through this collective effort, we aim to provide young people with opportunities to redirect their paths, reclaim their potential, and experience lasting transformation through hope, healing, and restorative justice.

Our Mission

We are committed to strengthening the ecosystem of community-led, healing-centered alternatives to juvenile detention, ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supportive environment.

By fostering collaboration, capacity-building, and resource access, we support the individuals and organizations leading this movement—including credible messengers, restorative justice practitioners, and other community-based leaders. Through professional development, access to funding, mental health support, and strategic partnerships, we help expand the impact of those working to transform the juvenile justice system and create lasting opportunities for youth.

Our purpose

The Redirect Collective exists to support credible messenger organizations that offer alternatives to detention for youth in the juvenile justice system. Our roots trace back to 2016, when faith leaders and community members, inspired by restorative justice advocate Rubén Austria, began challenging Charleston County’s reliance on juvenile detention. They envisioned a world where communities, not courts or detention centers, held the power to nurture and heal their own.

Originally known as Charleston Alternative to Detention (Charleston ATD), our organization has evolved to meet the growing needs of these leaders and organizations who have transformed their own lives after imprisonment to become agents of change within their communities.

Through resources, advocacy, strategic partnerships, and ultimately, by bringing credible messenger organizations together, our goal is to create a supportive community where leaders can push boundaries, drive change, and collectively transform the lives of justice-involved youth.

Cost of Juvenile Detention vs. Alternatives

In South Carolina, it costs over $250,000 annually to incarcerate a juvenile, while a year of transformative mentorship and community-based services costs less than $30,000. Investing in alternatives can save over $220,000 per youth with far better outcomes.
