Initial Movement and Foundation
October 2016: Rubén Austria of Community Connections for Youth (CCFY) presented in Charleston, laying the groundwork for the city's alternative to detention movement. His message emphasized the importance of community-driven initiatives to divert youth from the juvenile justice system.
2016: The Charleston Alternative to Detention movement officially began, with key community members like Judge Michèle Patrão Forsythe, Rev. Alverta Bowens, and others actively leading the charge. A collaborative panel was held addressing the national cost of juvenile detention and advocating for community-based alternatives.
November 2020: My Community’s Keeper Mentor Group, Inc. was founded by Keith Smalls, focusing on mentorship and youth restoration in response to community violence and youth disinvestment.
Reignition and Expansion
Summer 2021: Rev. Alverta Bowens and Rev. Alethia Meares reconnected the original stakeholders of the Charleston ATD Collaborative. This marked the rebirth of the initiative, aimed at revitalizing alternative solutions to juvenile detention.
October 2022: A major community gathering took place to design alternative models to the juvenile justice system, with the creation of a Community-Input Report detailing healing alternatives.
February 2023: Charleston ATD met with various stakeholders, including law enforcement and government officials, to discuss alignment and support for expanding their work.
May 2023: The Charleston ATD initiative officially launched with a focus on reducing youth incarceration and addressing racial disparities in the juvenile justice system.
Current Developments and Future Goals
2024: Charleston ATD deepened its relationship with Palmetto Project, 40-year old statewide nonprofit based in Charleston, which played a
pivotal role in supporting the initiative’s growth.
November 2024: As part of an intensive discovery process, Charleston ATD underwent a rebranding, leading to a new organizational identity: The Redirect Collective. This rebrand reflects a renewed focus on collaboration among stakeholders and a commitment to promoting youth development and preventing violence in communities.
2025: The Redirect Collective became a program of Palmetto Project. A major milestone for The Redirect Collective is the upcoming launch of the Technical Assistance and Capacity Building Academy, co-led by Aaron Polkey from Palmetto Project, marking a promising new chapter for the initiative in 2025 and beyond.
